How to get great instagram pictures in Lisbon?
It’s not only enough top know the best places to take pictures in Lisbon. You will have to find the perfect moment and avoid crowds can be pretty challenging during high season.
I suggest you get up early and plan your visit to be at the right place at sunset hours for the best instagram images of Lisbon.
Tips for taking better instagram pictures are:
- Be patient and have a loose schedule. If you are just rushing through attractions you cannot expect great images.
- Be the first or the last in. It pays to wake up early and get to the attractions before the crowds join in.
- Check sunrise and sunset hours for golden hour light. Generally speaking 1 hour after sunrise and 1 hour before sunset in when you get the most beautiful golden light.
- Plan indoor photos at harsh midday sun. You can get good images with sun flair behind an attraction if you know what you are doing but otherwise photos on the shade and indoors will be a good option.
- Search locations before you travel on instagram. Perusing the hashtag and location pictures of Lisbon Portugal on instagram can help you plan your shots in advance if you are new to the location.

What are the most Instagrammable places in Lisbon? Find below the map with the exact location of the best photo spots in Lisbon.
Best photo spots in Lisbon
Miradouro de Santa Luzia
The Miradouro de Santa Luzia in alfama offers some of the best views of Lisbon and of the river Tagus (rio Tejo).
This is a must stop in your trip around the neighborhood of Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon.
At this viewpoint you also find beautiful painted tiles and the settings that make for perfect pictures at both sunrise and sunset.
The pinks street is a little street in the Baixa neighborhood that has a cute pink ground color and a little bridge cutting the background view that provides for great Lisbon pics opportunities.
The street location was just down the road from our accommodation, the Martinhal Chiado Family Hotel. So it is a very convenient place to be if you want to see this street without too many other tourists around.
Mornings will be the best time to pass by and snap some good shots, when the business on the street are just opening.
Praça do Comércio
The commerce plaza along with the yellow building which surround 3 sides of the square are perfect for insta worthy images.
All around there is plenty of opportunity for great images even with the crowds.
Arco da Rua Augusta
The arco da rua de Augusta is a large ark built within the yellow building surrounding the Commerce plaza that opens to the Augusta street.
The ark itself is quite impressive and insta ready but you can also find some pretty corridor with pillars in the adjacent building that are great for photos too.
Santa Justa lift
A few blocks away from Commerce plaza you can find the Santa Justa lift, a metal structure from the early 20th century that provide panoramic views of the city.
You can grab the lift to go up to the viewing platform (probably after waiting on the queue) or walk around the pedestrian path to the Metal bridge that connects the viewing platform to a higher ground in Lisbon (close to the Carmo convent).
At the top you can take both panoramic instagram pics of the landscape but also portrait ones. The light at sunset is beautiful and the colorful house roof at the distance provide for the perfect image background.
Carmo church ruins
This will be at your door step when you get out of the Santa Justa Lift bridge.
It’s a highly unusual site with the church without a roof bearing witness to the horrible earthquake in 1755. Walking in the remains of the church under the blue sky of Lisbon will be an experience like no other and the make for fantastic images too.
Fado graffiti wall
Lisbon has a great graffiti culture and it’s no wonder it is often referred as an outdoor art gallery.
You will find countless street art display all around town but the most famous perhaps is Fado graffiti wall in Lisbon
This colorful wall has fado elements (Lisbon’s iconic music) and can be found at Escadinhas de São Cristóvão.
Elevador da Bica
You can take the Elevador da Bica (also called Ascensor da Bica) to help you climb the rather steep hill to get to the top of Bairro Alto and Bica neighborhoods. This is not a tram, it is more like a funicular but interestingly enough not called a funicular, but lift or ascensor.
Bica is considered Lisbon’s most picturesque lift. The colorful wagon combined with the narrow steep street full of distinctive buildings, little shops and restaurants provide for a image that is possibly one the most Portuguese pictures ever!
Castelo de São Jorge
São Jorge castle is the highest point in Almafa. The climb is mighty but the views are fantastic.
Not only is the São Jorge Castle one of the best attractions in the city it is also one of the most instagrammable places in Lisbon too.
Lisbon story arch
This is a cool mural that describes the history of Lisbon as a comic strip hidden beneath the Arch of Rua Norberto de Araujo, the one that supports the viewpoint of Portas do Sol.
The Lisbon Story Comics is a short distance from Saint George Castle and also worth a visit for instagrammable images.
This is an iconic location that is worth visiting not only for pictures but for the history.
Belem hosts some of the oldest building in Lisbon, which was not affected by the earthquake in the 18th century, when most of Lisbon old city centre was destroyed.
The tower can get pretty busy with tourists all around but also when crowded you can take pictures in a certain way to avoid other people in. There is plenty of space around the tower and a large green area that is great for picnics and relaxation too.
Discoveries monument & Tagus river promenade
You will likely walk through the discovery monument and the promenade along the Tagus river if you want to see the Belem tower.
The monument itself is a beautiful structure that is worth some instagram snaps. You could also climb the monument and get even better images!
However even from the ground there will be amazing opportunities for images. The 25 de Abril bridge (a bridge that is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as both are red suspension bridges) makes a great backdrop around that area.
When visiting Belem you should skip the Jerónimos Monastery.
This building is highly ornate and has architecture that is intrinsically linked to the discovery years. All those detailed ornaments can be linked back to a moment in the history of Portugal Discoveries.
The beauty of the building interior is mesmerizing for anyone to see. Snap some of the most beautiful Lisbon pictures inside the Jerónimos Monastery and the main church or the passageways around the garden outside.
The Rossio square
The Rossio square in Bairro Alto is also a place of interest for instagrammable pictures.
It’s possibly the liveliest square in the city. Here you will see the famous Portuguese cobblestone wavy mosaic pavement that you can find in many other locations all over Portugal and in former colonies.
The square is surrounded by grand buildings and stores, where you can stop to relax and sip a hot beverage. The lights at Christmas time are also noteworthy.
This bookstore, found at the XL Factory area, is a store selling books but also modern art hall awesome stuff such an old newspaper printing press, CD library with CD players and a cafe.
The quirky, alternative ambiance is not only fun but a popular spot for Lisbon instagram snaps! Don;t miss this gem if you are visiting the area.
Lisbon zoo is perhaps one of the most underrated places in Lisbon as I don’t think most tourists get to see it unless they are visiting Lisbon with kids.
The grounds in which the Lisbon zoo is found is beautiful and there is a free green area/park before the gates so you can even enjoy its beauty without paying for tickets.
There is a pond with benches and plenty of trees making a perfect setting for candid images. Inside the zoo you will also find a stand up cable car that takes you around the entire ground and above the animal habitats.
This ride offers many beautiful views as well the opportunity to see a lot of the zoo from above.
Old Tram photo
This is a staple image while in Lisbon or in Porto. In these two cities you will still find the old historic trams that are full of character zooming around the city.
Lisbon has many old tram routes. One of the most famous, the line 28, takes you all the way to Alfama district for the views.
However they can get pretty busy during season months, specially during the months of July and August, and you will not always have opportunity for pictures inside the tram.
However you can snap images as they pass through the narrow and hilly streets of Lisbon that are instagram picture perfect!
Sintra is not Lisbon per se but it is a very easy and popular day trip from Lisbon (about 40 minutes away) that many tourists take.
Sintra is picture perfect in so many ways that it is hard to pick one location, it is by far one of the most interesting places I have ever been too and if you need to go (and have the time), make sure you stay for a couple of days to enjoy not only Sintra attractions but the entire Sintra and Cascais Natural Park which is stunning.
Most instagram worthy shots in Sintra happen at the Pena Palace and at the Quinta da Regaleira, which you should definitely visit but do not neglect other amazing places such as the natural reserve and some of the beaches.
Also Sintra is where you can find the original Travesserios of Sintra (one traditional Portuguese dessert) that you should eat in Portugal!
And these are just the top Lisbon instagram locations but on your trip I am sure you will find more opportunities for images too. In fact Lisbon has several eateries, cafe and restaurants that are gorgeous for pics.
