How to get great instagram pictures in Lisbon?

It’s not only enough top know the best places to take pictures in Lisbon. You will have to find the perfect moment and avoid crowds can be pretty challenging during high season.

I suggest you get up early and plan your visit to be at the right place at sunset hours for the best instagram images of Lisbon.

Tips for taking better instagram pictures are:

  • Be the first or the last in. It pays to wake up early and get to the attractions before the crowds join in.
  • Check sunrise and sunset hours for golden hour light. Generally speaking 1 hour after sunrise and 1 hour before sunset in when you get the most beautiful golden light.
  • Plan indoor photos at harsh midday sun. You can get good images with sun flair behind an attraction if you know what you are doing but otherwise photos on the shade and indoors will be a good option.

Pink street in Lisbon

The famous pink street in Lisbon is not busy in the mornings.

The pinks street is a little street in the Baixa neighborhood that has a cute pink ground color and a little bridge cutting the background view that provides for great Lisbon pics opportunities.

The street location was just down the road from our accommodation, the Martinhal Chiado Family Hotel. So it is a very convenient place to be if you want to see this street without too many other tourists around.

Mornings will be the best time to pass by and snap some good shots, when the business on the street are just opening.

The passageways on the building adjacent to the Arco da Rua Augusta are some of the most instagrammable places in Lisbon.

Santa Justa Lift

The Santa Santa Justa Lift (or Carmo lift).

A few blocks away from Commerce plaza you can find the Santa Justa lift, a metal structure from the early 20th century that provide panoramic views of the city.

You can grab the lift to go up to the viewing platform (probably after waiting on the queue) or walk around the pedestrian path to the Metal bridge that connects the viewing platform to a higher ground in Lisbon (close to the Carmo convent).

Carmo convent ruins

The Carmo convent ruins with no roof.

This will be at your door step when you get out of the Santa Justa Lift bridge.

Elevador da Bica in Lisbon.

You can take the Elevador da Bica (also called Ascensor da Bica) to help you climb the rather steep hill to get to the top of Bairro Alto and Bica neighborhoods. This is not a tram, it is more like a funicular but interestingly enough not called a funicular, but lift or ascensor.

Bica is considered Lisbon’s most picturesque lift. The colorful wagon combined with the narrow steep street full of distinctive buildings, little shops and restaurants provide for a image that is possibly one the most Portuguese pictures ever!

  • Belem tower

Belem tower lisbon

Belem tower in Lisbon.

This is an iconic location that is worth visiting not only for pictures but for the history.

Belem hosts some of the oldest building in Lisbon, which was not affected by the earthquake in the 18th century, when most of Lisbon old city centre was destroyed.

The tower can get pretty busy with tourists all around but also when crowded you can take pictures in a certain way to avoid other people in. There is plenty of space around the tower and a large green area that is great for picnics and relaxation too.

  • Discoveries monument & Tagus river promenade

Discovery monument

Padrão_dos_Descobrimentos in Lisbon.

You will likely walk through the discovery monument and the promenade along the Tagus river if you want to see the Belem tower.

The monument itself is a beautiful structure that is worth some instagram snaps. You could also climb the monument and get even better images!

Jerónimos Monastery detailed architecture makes for fantastic images.

When visiting Belem you should skip the Jerónimos Monastery.

This building is highly ornate and has architecture that is intrinsically linked to the discovery years. All those detailed ornaments can be linked back to a moment in the history of Portugal Discoveries.

The beauty of the building interior is mesmerizing for anyone to see. Snap some of the most beautiful Lisbon pictures inside the Jerónimos Monastery and the main church or the passageways around the garden outside.

  • The Rossio square

Rossio square in Lisbon

The Rossio square in Lisbon.

The Rossio square in Bairro Alto is also a place of interest for instagrammable pictures.

It’s possibly the liveliest square in the city. Here you will see the famous Portuguese cobblestone wavy mosaic pavement that you can find in many other locations all over Portugal and in former colonies.

The square is surrounded by grand buildings and stores, where you can stop to relax and sip a hot beverage. The lights at Christmas time are also noteworthy.

  • Lisbon zoo

Lisbon zoo

The Lisbon zoo ground is beautiful and perfect for outdoor images.

Lisbon zoo is perhaps one of the most underrated places in Lisbon as I don’t think most tourists get to see it unless they are visiting Lisbon with kids.

The grounds in which the Lisbon zoo is found is beautiful and there is a free green area/park before the gates so you can even enjoy its beauty without paying for tickets.

There is a pond with benches and plenty of trees making a perfect setting for candid images. Inside the zoo you will also find a stand up cable car that takes you around the entire ground and above the animal habitats.

This ride offers many beautiful views as well the opportunity to see a lot of the zoo from above.

  • Old Tram photo

Old tram in Lisbon

Old historical Lisbon tram.

This is a staple image while in Lisbon or in Porto. In these two cities you will still find the old historic trams that are full of character zooming around the city.

Lisbon has many old tram routes. One of the most famous, the line 28, takes you all the way to Alfama district for the views.

However they can get pretty busy during season months, specially during the months of July and August, and you will not always have opportunity for pictures inside the tram.

However you can snap images as they pass through the narrow and hilly streets of Lisbon that are instagram picture perfect!

  • Sintra

Sintra Quinta da regaleira

Quinta da regaleira is a magical place for instagram images!

Sintra is not Lisbon per se but it is a very easy and popular day trip from Lisbon (about 40 minutes away) that many tourists take.

Sintra is picture perfect in so many ways that it is hard to pick one location, it is by far one of the most interesting places I have ever been too and if you need to go (and have the time), make sure you stay for a couple of days to enjoy not only Sintra attractions but the entire Sintra and Cascais Natural Park which is stunning.

Most instagram worthy shots in Sintra happen at the Pena Palace and at the Quinta da Regaleira, which you should definitely visit but do not neglect other amazing places such as the natural reserve and some of the beaches.

Also Sintra is where you can find the original Travesserios of Sintra (one traditional Portuguese dessert) that you should eat in Portugal!

And these are just the top Lisbon instagram locations but on your trip I am sure you will find more opportunities for images too. In fact Lisbon has several eateries, cafe and restaurants that are gorgeous for pics.
